New Camaro a winner?
As a teenager in the late '60s, I made repeated passes by a Chevy dealership showroom on a main street in my hometown. The lure was a dream car - a new Z28 Camaro with a Hugger Orange treatment. It glowed with orange paint, contrasted with white stripes.
It was tagged "The Hugger" because of its road-hugging suspension - wonderful in the day, but awkward by modern standards.
This vision was rekindled by the Camaro Convertible Concept recently unveiled at Detroit's North American International Auto Show.
There's no doubting the concept's retro influence. It seems that for a new design of a sporty car to be accepted, it must have strong retro elements. Pontiac found this out with the shaky launching of the new, non-retro GTO. Of course, the execution of blending classic styling must be right.
Ford failed with the Thunderbird, but hit a home run with the Mustang. Dodge's Challenger Concept was well-received and is set for production, and the Camaro will roll onto the streets in production form, too.
